Russia has threatened to restrict the activities of American media in the country in response to the pressure exerted by the US on the Kremlin-backed broadcaster, reported on Sunday a press-the Secretary the Ministry of foreign Affairs.
Russian officials have accused Washington of putting undue pressure on the Kremlin-funded broadcaster RT, many suspected of meddling in US domestic politics.
The press Secretary of the Ministry of foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova said that in the current situation, Moscow has the right to respond.
«We never used the Russian legislation in respect of foreign correspondents, as a lever of pressure or censorship, or some political influence, ever,» said Zakharova in an interview with Russian NTV television. «But this is a special case.»
She stated the provisions of the Russian law of 1991, according to which if the Russian media is restricted in a foreign country, Moscow has the right to impose proportionate restrictions on the media from the country of the opponent.
Zakharova has not pointed to any specific media, as a target response. The press Secretary also said that for Moscow there is no difference whether these are funded by the media at the expense of the US Federal government or from private sources.
