The Governor’s mansion in VA and NJ: everything revolves around the President?

The Governor’s mansion in VA and NJ: everything revolves around the President?

The results of the gubernatorial elections in Virginia and new Jersey obviously liking the 44th US President – Barack Obama. What can be said about the current head of state.

We will remind, on Tuesday the majority of the residents of these two States voted for the candidates of the Democratic party.

So, former Lieutenant Governor of Virginia Ralph Northam received the support of 53.7% of the electorate, and former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Phil Murphy won the trust of 56% of voters in new Jersey.

The Reaction Of Barack Obama

Barack Obama congratulated the winners in his Twitter:

This is what happens when the people vote. Congrats @RalphNortham and @PhilMurphyNJ . And congratulations to all the victors in state legislative, county and mayors’ races. Every office in a democracy counts!

— Barack Obama (@’s Presidency) November 8, 2017

«That’s what happens when people vote. Congratulations to Ralph Northam and Phil Murphy. And congratulations to all the winners of the elections to the legislature, mayors and County races. Each position has a significance for democracy!»

The fly in the ointment from trump

At the same time, Northam received not flattering comments in his address from Donald trump. Using your favorite social network, the President said the following:

Ralph Northam will allow crime to be rampant in Virginia. He’s weak on crime, weak on our GREAT VETS, Anti-Second Amendment….

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 7, 2017

«Ralph Northam will allow crime to grow in Virginia. He is weak in matters related to crime, our great veterans, opposition to the Second amendment…»

….and has been horrible on the Virginia economy. Vote @EdWGillespie today!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 7, 2017

«…and it manifested itself in the economy of Virginia. Vote for ed Gillespie!»

Ralph Northam, who are you?

But despite the presidential criticisms, the idea of life of military personnel and veterans in Northam, apparently, has for eight years he served in the U.S. Army as a military doctor.

And before becoming a doctor, he was a second Lieutenant and received a promotion, earning the rank of major.

Campaign promises Ralph Northam included the introduction of a law limiting the right to buy weapons more often than once a month, a minimum wage of $15 an hour, the spread of Medicaid to 400 thousand inhabitants of Virginia and tax incentives for small businesses that provide their employees paid family leave.

Trump: Gillespie wins the crime, and Northam – no

Favoring their candidate, trump said that Gillespie, unlike Northam, just to defeat crime. And in particular, to cope with the criminal gang MS-13.

.@EdWGillespie will totally turn around the high crime and poor economic performance of VA. MS-13 and crime will be gone. Vote today, ASAP!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 7, 2017

«Ed Gillespie coming crashing down on the head of a high level of crime and poor economic performance in Virginia. MS-13 and crime will disappear. Vote today and as soon as possible!»

However, the efforts of the President were not successful: the Republican candidate received almost 9% fewer votes than the candidate-the Democrat.

«Tranism no trump»: a shrewd tactic-ed Gillespie

It is noteworthy that Gillespie himself, whose campaign is often described as «tranism no trump», avoided mention of the President in their speeches.

And despite the fact that his views largely coincide with Ternovskii, the politician tried to Dodge falling under the shadow of the name of the President.

Same as trump, ed Gillespie criticized players in the National football League, as a protest knelt down during the anthem.

Like the President, the politician drew attention to the problem of illegal Latin American immigrants who commit crimes and putting the violence. He did not support the demolition of the monuments to the confederates, like trump, who called the campaign «stupid» and «vile».

The reason why Gillespie chose to use such tactics are quite transparent. Bringing to the masses his conservative ideas, he relies on the electorate sympathetic to the Republicans.

However, holding the President at arm’s length, trying to appeal to those who are confused by the name trump. And if you’re lucky, it will attract even those who stand on the other side of the fence.

And it can be understood. In the war (read «politics»), all means are good, and in Virginia, which is traditionally split between «red» and «blue» lights.

Virginia state itinerant votes

For example, from 1968 to 2000 in the presidential election the majority of voters voted for the Republican candidates, but the people of the state twice elected Barack Obama. Last year, 49.73% of the vote of Virginia was given in support of Hillary Clinton, when trump received only 44.41%

In the gubernatorial field, the voices of local residents migrate from the Republicans to the Democrats and often. The current Governor of the state, whose term ends January 13, 2018, is Democrat Terry McAuliffe.

In 2009, the ruling of the chair sat the Republican Robert McDonnell, and before him were carried two Democrat – Timothy Kane and mark Warner.

But, as we already know, try Gillespie was a complete failure. Good luck in the face of the Virginia smiled again Democrats.

What else was (and was not) on Twitter trump?

Another (and so far last) trump’s tweet in which he mentioned ed Gillespie, was the following:

Ed Gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what I stand for. Don’t forget, Republicans won 4 out of 4 House seats, and with the economy doing record numbers, we will continue to win, even bigger than before!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 8, 2017

«Ed Gillespie worked hard, but did not support me or what I stand for. Do not forget that the Republicans have won four out of four seats in the House of representatives, and with the economy reaching record levels, we will continue to win, and even more than before!»

But Phil Murphyeventually won the support of the residents of new Jersey, trump chose not to mention. In the same way as his Republican rival Kim Guadagno.

What candidates promised the people of new Jersey?

The first carrying the liberal agenda, promising to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, to increase funding for schools, to legalize marijuana, increase the percentage of «tax millionaires» and to limit the influence of the tramp in the state.

His opponent, who used tactics Gillespie, advocated the reduction of property tax, the abolition of the financing of cities of refuge in the state and the construction of the second headquarters of the Amazon company in new Jersey.

The failure of Guadagno as a result of the friendship of her boss with the President?

But she tried not to associate with trump and the current Republican state Governor – Chris Christie, who is on friendly terms with the President.

A very difficult task, especially considering that Guadagno for eight years worked as the first Deputy Christie. Now the Governor’s ratings dropped to record low figures over the past few years.

Apparently, this has a definite effect on the image of Guadagno, which, in the end, gained 13.3 percent of votes less than Phil Murphy. Eight years later, the Democrats are back in control in new Jersey.

How to predict the next governors?

It seems that the idea about the regularity of the simultaneous victories in Virginia and new Jersey candidates of the same party every time after the presidential elections has the right to life. While the party affiliation of the President and the governors always different.

For example, in 2008 in the race for the presidential seat was won by Democrat Barack Obama, and the next year the new governors in both States have become Republican.

The same situation occurred in 2001, when Republican George W. Bush occupied the Oval office of the White house, and governors of Virginia and new Jersey elected Democrats.

The presidency of Democrat bill Clinton was no exception: in 1993, in those States again voted for candidates for Governor from one party – Republican.

But the beginning of a curious trend put Republican George HW Bush, after the election, whose victory in the gubernatorial elections of Virginia and new Jersey was won by the Democrats.

And, coming back to today: in the White house sitting Republican trump, and governors began the Democrats.

Well, when we will know the name of the next President of the United States, perhaps you can try to predict the party affiliation of the future governors of Virginia and new Jersey.
