America closes the program to support refugees from Haiti, depriving almost 60 000 Haitians previously granted the right of permanent residence in the United States. The so-called status of TPS (Temporary Protected Status) that is assigned to Haitians, has been used in USA since 1990. It grants the right to residents of other countries affected by natural disasters or armed conflicts, to remain in the U.S. until life-threatening conditions in their country are eliminated. This status protects the holder from deportation.

Cancellation of the program said the head of the Department of homeland security Elaine Duke. Haitians will get 18 months to leave the United States. Their special status bude fully terminated on July 22, 2019. During this time, according to Duke, the Haitian government will be able to prepare for the reception of its citizens, and Haitians will be able to securely and effortlessly plan your move. The possibility of other Haitians visas to enter the United States (working, training etc.) are not excluded.

After the earthquake the country was gripped by a cholera epidemic. In a statement, the head of the Department stressed that the measure of allowing Haitians to freely enter the U.S. and remain here in legal status was temporary, but because of the emergency conditions have passed the Haitians asked to return home.
