Members of the city Council of Washington come up with an initiative to rename the street in front of the Russian Embassy in honour of a political opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was murdered in 2015. About it reports The Washington Post.
Block of Wisconsin Avenue between Edmonds and Davis streets will be renamed «the Square of Boris Nemtsov» (Boris Nemtsov Plaza), if the law is approved by the Senate.
The new name will appear beneath the existing street sign Wisconsin Avenue, although the address in the designated block will not change.
The Creator of the bill were Democrat Mary M. Cech. She States that this measure will serve as a reminder of the democratic values of America.
«This man was killed, and he was a fighter for democracy in Russia, he is a hero,» said Cech. «But, of course, it is not considered a hero in Russia.»
Cech said that the initiative of renaming comes not only from her personally. Sponsors of the bill was made by Republican Senator Marco Rubio, democratic Senator Christopher A. coons and Republican John McCain.
This is not the first time the US has by renaming the streets trying to Express their position in relation to other countries. In 1984, the Senate renamed the street prior to the Russian Embassy on 16th Street NW in honor of Russian dissident Andrei Sakharov.
A hearing on the bill should pass early next year.
