Today, December 19, in the framework of the American analytical center «Atlantic Council» discussed the role of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbas.
The American diplomat and special representative of the US State Department on Ukraine Kurt Volker said that before the Russian Federation sent troops into the Donbas and annexed Crimea, the situation in Ukraine was calm. He said: «If Russia wants to withdraw troops from the Donbass, the world community is ready to help her in this».
Former Deputy Minister of defense of the USA Evelyn Farkas, doubts that Russia intends to transfer control of the Russian-Ukrainian border, which is necessary for the UN peacekeeping mission. She stressed that the United States must make it clear to Russian President Vladimir Putinthat if he doesn’t go for a deal, sanctions will be tightened.
According to Farkas, trump intends to consider the issue of granting Ukraine lethal weapons. She stressed that the role of the Ukrainian authorities in the solution of the conflict must also be significant. «Ukraine should conduct an information policy in the Donbass. Ukrainians need to communicate with the Ukrainians. Russia is waging an active campaign of disinformation,» he said.
The us diplomat Alexander Vershbow said that the UN peacekeeping mission can solve some problems faced by the Donbass in the conflict, for example, its representatives will be engaged in the demining of the region and the resumption of the economy.
