Why are Republicans afraid that Michael Cohen will be the beginning of the end

If you believe the sources close to the presidential administration, after the former lawyer, Donald trump, Michael Cohen, decided to go for a plea deal, the White house is seriously worried about the prospect of impeachment. The current attorney trump claims that there’s nothing to worry about, but not all agree with him.

What happened

Pleaded guilty to financial irregularities, a former associate of the current President said that during the campaign of 2016 received from him direct orders to pay for the silence of the women with whom trump engaged in an intimate relationship.

The name of the head of state in the testimony is not known, but it is labeled as «figure 1» who later «became the President of the United States.»

What worries supporters of the trump

According to experts, there are several reasons to worry:

  • The testimony of Cohen may not only be a source of information that was previously known only to the inner circle of the President, but to give Mueller some new leads to his own investigations
  • Although disorders in which currently admitted attorney, are not related to interference in the elections, they still are criminal offences — which involved the head of the country

Besides, the solution to one of the closest and most loyal advisers trump go to «the other side» in itself is a severe blow to the confidence of the Republicans.

  • Journalist and political analyst Maggie Haberman added that his supporters «worried about impeachment more than ever», feeling the «reality» of what is happening. «This does not mean that impeachment actually happens, — said Haberman — but they all moved to a new stage».
  • In an interview with MSNBC, presidential historian Jon Meachum noted that the situation reminds him of the events of June 1973-wow, that preceded the Watergate scandal.

«It feels like a real turning point,» added Bradford.

25 June 1973, John Dean, who was an adviser to President Richard Nixon for three years, first addressed the Senate.

Dean, is closely connected with events in the «Watergate», has agreed to plead guilty and become a key witness for the prosecution. Giving evidence, he launched a chain of events that eventually led to the resignation of Nixon.

  • The current attorney trump Rudy Giuliani also commented on the situation, saying that «the charges against Mr. Cohen, there’s no hint of illegal actions of the President.»

  • President trump said in his Twitter that the two cases of financial violations, in which Cohen pleaded guilty, «does not constitute a crime. The Obama campaign also had serious financial irregularities, but all easily fixed up.»
