In the U.S. Senate recognized the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people

The U.S. Senate Committee on foreign relations adopted a resolution S. Res.435 recognizing the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Initiated by senators Robert Portman and Richard by Urbinum resolution will now be sent for approval directly to Senate.

According to the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States, the document condemns the systematic violations of human rights, including the right to self-determination and freedom of expression, committed by the Soviet government against the Ukrainians in 1932-1933 According to the text of the resolution, the Committee intends to raise awareness among the world community about the tragedy artificially created during the Soviet era.

According to the press service of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, the Ukrainian leader, who, ctstat, is now in new York for the UN General Assembly, praised the efforts of the Ukrainian community in America in the issue of recognition of Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

«Famine has become synonymous with unprecedented human tragedy», — said Poroshenko during today’s meeting with representatives of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the United States.

The resolution on recognition of the Holodomor was submitted to Congress on 14 March 2018.
