Expired visa is ahead on the popularity of illegal entry into the United States

Center for migration studies has published its estimates of the unregistered population in 2017. According to the report, the number of immigrants in the U.S. illegally is much lower than the number of persons living with an expired visa. It is also noted a sharp reduction coming from Mexico. Both trends have continued.

The report’s authors believe that their data contradict the position of the trump calling main entry illegal immigration issue and calling for the construction of the Wall. For example, 62% of undocumented migrants were those who entered legally on a visa but has not left in time. And the main point of future arrival of illegal immigrants are airports, not holes in the borders.

Thus in total number of illegal immigrants many years reduced the proportion of immigrants from Mexico. In the first place immigrants from India, whose population grew by 72% and reached 630 thousand. Also, the growing number of illegal immigrants from Venezuela — almost twice, reaching 145 thousand. For comparison, the number of illegally staying immigrants from Mexico declined in 2010 by 20% or 400 thousand people. Although their share in the total number of illegal immigrants remains high — more than 5 million people. Reduced the number of illegal immigrants from Ecuador, Jamaica, Haiti, Colombia (increase in the number of immigrants from Venezuela began in 2013 and, apparently, only due to local causes).

CMS Executive Director Donald Kerwin, in his statement, said that «From our research it is clear that individuals who have delayed their visas, increase the undocumented population of the United States with greater speed than the border crossing. It’s not a spike, but a trend that has become the norm. The wall is not only expensive, but does not solve the problem.»

In General, the undocumented population declined by one million people in 2010 to 10.7 million.
