Governors Andrew Cuomo (new York), Jay Margie reiger (WA) and Gretchen Whitmer (mi) officially demanded from the Federal government answers to questions on the Federal programs lost their funding, and civil servants left without salaries:
«Each of us took effective steps permitted by law to soften the impact of the partial closure of the government, including the provision in our States unemployment benefits to Federal employees and their families who were left without salaries and now face the real threat of missing payments for rent, mortgage, credit cards, telephone bills and auto loans,» — said in a joint statement the governors.
The heads of States noted that Federal law does not allow them to provide the same assistance to Federal employees who continue to work full time without a paycheck. «This is clearly unfair and wrong,» — said in a statement. Hundreds of thousands of Federal workers, including Coast guard, air traffic controllers, FDA and many other authorities of the States the law can’t.
The governors demanded from the Ministry of labor and Congress immediately allow the right conflict and allow the state governments to come to the aid of local residents and to prevent a catastrophe.
Although, as stated in the end of the statement, it would be better if the Federal government stopped the shutdown.
Yesterday Andrew Cuomo ordered the provision of assistance to civil servants, unemployed and certain other categories of residents of the state who have not received this month payment under Federal programs.
