Sanctions for Syria and support for Israel: the U.S. Senate approved a new bill

The U.S. Senate on Monday, January 28, approved a bill on the support of allies in the middle East including new sanctions against Syria. Also in the bill there are a number of measures to combat the movement of Boycott, Divest and Sanctions (BDS).

«Boycott, isolation and sanctions» — a global political campaign and social movement calling for economic and political pressure on Israel to stop them, described by organizers as a violation of international law. BDS calls for «various forms of boycott of Israel as long as he will not abide by its international obligations».

During the 35-day shutdown bill was blocked, but after trump and the Democrats agreed to temporarily open the government (at least until February 15), the majority of Senate Democrats joined the Republicans and supported the bill.

Recall: to become law, the bill must be approved by the House of representatives, where the majority of seats belongs to the Democrats.

The bill contains provisions for the introduction of new sanctions against Syria and help guarantee the security of Israel and Jordan, as well as provides a number of measures against BDS. Political scientists have called it «Pro-Israel». And this was the Senate and House of representatives may not converge, as some Democrats say the action against BDS in the United States in violation of freedom of speech.

«I do not support this movement, but we must protect the constitutional right of every American to participate in political activities,» said Democrat Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

What Republican Senator Kevin Kramer from North Dakota, remarked: «It is not that other, as a veiled attempt to hide the growing anti-Semitism in the Democratic party.»
