Virginia Governor Northam will not resign over racist photo

The Governor of Virginia, Democrat Ralph Northam on Saturday went public with an explanation of its position in connection with the publication of racist photos reportedly taken in his young time in medical school in 1984.

  • First, Northam stated that it was not going to leave them to resign;
  • Second, he denies that it is in the photo: «I’m not one of those people in this photo». The Northam said that saw this photo for the first time this Friday and it is «shocking and appalling».

However he then confessed to other «sins» of his youth, saying that in 1984, he won the dance contest in San Antonio, where he was wearing a dark Shoe Polish on the cheeks as part of a costume of Michael Jackson.

«I’ve made mistakes in my past, but I’m a man of my word, I have friends on both sides of the aisle,» said Northam. «It was a shame, and that’s why I reached out and apologized … I’ll work hard to keep their faith in me and my ability to lead them and, hopefully, together we’ll move forward.»

A reporter heard about the love of Ralph to Michael Jackson, asked the Governor to perform the moonwalk, without which imitate the legendary singer is impossible, but Northam refused.

Lieutenant Governor and Justin Fairfax refused tonight to call the Northam to the resignation. «The Governor had to apologize, and I’m glad he did. He also approached me personally to Express my sincere regret and to apologize. I worked closely with Ralph Nortamo for many years. He was my friend and treated me and my family with hospitality and respect, » he said in his statement after the Northam held a press conference.
