16-year-old unaccompanied immigrant died in Texas after surgery

16-year-old immigrant from Guatemala who came unaccompanied (without parents), died in custody in Texas a few days after arrival in the shelter of the office for refugee resettlement.

According to media reports, the day after his arrival, the boy showed signs of the disease. From-under guards it was twice taken to a local hospital and eventually was sent by helicopter to children’s hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The press-Secretary of Management on Affairs of children and families Department of health and social services Evelyn Stauffer said to BuzzFeed that «the cause of death currently under consideration, and in accordance with standard policies and procedures ORR, the case will be subjected to the full consideration.» The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed.

The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Guatemala said on Wednesday that the boy underwent emergency surgery in hospital after a serious infection in the frontal lobe. Foreign Ministry said that the infection has not improved even after surgery to relieve pressure in the skull of the boy.

According to data collected by CNN, the young man came from the Guatemalan district Camotan, April 19, he crossed the U.S. border near El Paso, Texas, and was detained by the border patrol. The evening of 20 April he was transferred to an orphanage where when the population of the health problems doctors have not seen. 21 APR boy «got sick, felt fever, chills and headache». The shelter staff took him to the emergency room of a hospital where he was given medical aid, after which he was returned to the shelter. On the morning of 22 April, after his health had not improved, he was taken to another emergency room of the hospital on the ambulance. From there he was transferred to children’s hospital in Texas, and several days were treated in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

The boy underwent emergency surgery at the hospital, but on 30 April, after days of round-the-clock intensive care, he died. Officials do not know if the child has a pre-existing disease or he got sick during a trip from Guatemala, says Sylvia Samines, Vice-Consul at the Consulate of Guatemala in McAllen, Texas .
