The administration trump plans to introduce new visa restrictions for pregnant women to curb «birth tourism»

The administration of Donald trump plans to announce new visa restrictions on so-called practice of «ancestral tourism».

State Department publishes new rules on Thursday, January 23.

«Birth tourism» — when foreign nationals arrive in the United States to give birth to a child who automatically gets U.S. citizenship. The new rules will make it difficult to obtain a tourist visa to travel to USA during pregnancy.

Expectant mothers will have to overcome an additional obstacle before a visa is to convince the consular officer that they have a legitimate reason, apart from tourism, to come to the US.

President trump believes immigration is the main issue, calling it a crisis that threatens national security.

At the moment, the consular officials are not required to ask a woman about her pregnancy during visa interviews. But in November of last year the incident occurred, when the Japanese said to take a pregnancy test in the bathroom of the airport before to fly from Hong Kong to the U.S. on Saipan.

Later, the airline apologized for the incident.

«We have taken action on flights to Saipan from February 2019 to ensure that the immigration laws of the United States will not be undermined», — stated in the message of the airline.

There are no statistics on how many foreign women come to the United States precisely in order to give birth. The CDC estimates that in 2017 from foreign mothers were born 9254 child that is less than 1% of the total number of children born last year.
