The US offer to supply Belarus oil and gas after Russia’s refusal

Us officials said Belarus that they will be happy to supply all the oil and gas needs of the Eastern European country, after its supplier — Russia turned off the tap.

«The United States wants to help Belarus to build its own sovereign country, said U.S. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo at a joint press conference with Minister of foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei. Our energy producers are ready to supply 100% of the necessary oil at competitive prices. We are the largest energy producer in the world, and all you have to do is call us.»

Becoming a close ally of the Russian Federation, Belarus may be absorbed by a large neighbouring state after countries failed to agree on new prices of oil in 2020. Russia insisted on strengthening economic integration as a condition for lowering interest rates. As a result, from 1 January 2020 Belarus stopped receiving oil from Russia.

Historically what the US has strained relations with Belarus, because for more than a decade Washington has imposed sanctions against the Eastern European countries for violations of human rights. Former Secretary of state Condoleezza rice, who worked in the administration of George W. Bush, called Belarus «the last dictatorship of Europe».
