President Joe Biden said on Friday that social media platforms such as Facebook are «killing people» with misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic-amid how the White House has stepped up criticism of false data on social networks.

«They are killing people. , the only pandemic right now is among the unvaccinated, » Biden told reporters as he left the White House and went to Camp David.

On Thursday, the US surgeon general, Dr. Vivek Murthy, also warned that misinformation about the pandemic is a » serious threat to public health,» and the administration directly accused the social media giant Facebook of not doing enough to stop the spread of false information on the platform.

Meetings between the Biden administration and Facebook in recent weeks have been «tense,» a source familiar with the conversations told CNN.

According to the source, administration officials who told Facebook about their concerns about misinformation about vaccines concluded that the company either » does not take it seriously, or is hiding something.»

A Facebook spokesperson did not directly respond to the source’s characterization of the company’s efforts, but told CNN that Facebook is working to combat misinformation about COVID-19.
