New York is launching a new program to combat discrimination against tenants

In January, the Ministry of housing and urban development (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) announced its intention to suspend the Law on fair housing (Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing — AFFH), fighting against discrimination of tenants.

The housing Department of new York city (NYC Housing Preservation and Development — HPD) expressed its position on this issue quite emphatically declaring last week about creating your own antiagregatsionnoe program Where We Live NYC.

HPD plans to carefully study the statistics as well as the opinions of local residents and communities about AFFH. On their basis will prepare a report on how the government can improve living conditions for different social groups, «providing them with fair prices and selection [of housing]».

The representative of HPD Maria Springer-Torres called the program «phenomenal opportunity» to study «both historical and current causes of segregation among tenants» to give all new Yorkers equal opportunity for housing choice.

In the study, the HPD hopes to establish strong feedback from residents of the borough, and to establish contact with more than 250 organizations, including religious and community groups, human rights activists representing citizens with disabilities and developers of affordable housing.
