Mold, parasites, and exposed wiring: new York apartments turned out to be the most problematic in the United States

In the residential homes of new York, there are apartments in which people face lot of problems: mold, water leaks, rodents, bare wires or unbearable cold.

A new study, conducted by the Porch, showed that new York is the first city in the country on housing inequality and the number of buildings with a high level of problem apartments. The study, which was analyzed census data on housing quality, showed that the problem apartments is 7% of the new York houses.

«No American city can boast of impeccable housing, but in some cities there are particularly serious problems. Because rents in them reaches a record high, the housing problem may be the only affordable option for many residents,» the report says.

The aim of the study was to find out not only what problems faced by the residents of a poor new York apartments, but who are forced to live in such conditions. In the end, it turned out that across the country, problems with the quality of housing largely depends on racial and economic characteristics.

Families of African Americans by more than 50% more likely to report mold in their homes. Family of native Americans more than two times more susceptible to colds due to poorly heated housing. And people with education levels below the average 50% more likely to be «victims» of faulty wiring.

In the «Big Apple» there are 6.7% of the apartments, which are very poorly heated. As a rule, their residents make from $20 thousand to $29 thousand a year, therefore can’t afford to move.

Public housing in new York is the best conditions, notes the study. 31% of residents had seen cockroaches in their apartments, they also often attacked by rats.
