New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday May 7 that the state's tenant eviction moratorium has been extended for another 60 days as the state continues to fight the COVID-19 outbreak.
During his daily coronavirus briefing, Cuomo said that the moratorium, which was due to expire on June 20, will now be in effect until August 20, during which time there will be no late payment fees.
“No one can be evicted for non-payment of rent, residential or commercial, until August 20,” Cuomo said. «I hope this gives the families a break.»
Tenants will also be able to use their security deposit to pay rent, Cuomo said. For landlords, the state is working with banks on relief plans.
“We are trying to reach a compromise between tenants and landlords. We also help landlords, but humanly I don’t want families to be evicted at this difficult time, ”the governor added.
