In New York, no one will be evicted for non-payment of rent until August 20

Governor New York City's Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday May 7 that the state's tenant eviction moratorium has been extended for another 60 days as the state continues to fight the COVID-19 outbreak.

During his daily coronavirus briefing, Cuomo said the moratorium, which was due to expire on June 20, will now be in effect until August 20 and no fees will be charged during this period for late payment.

“No one can be evicted for failing to pay rent, residential or commercial, until August 20,” Cuomo said. “I hope this gives the families a break.”

Tenants will also be able to use their security deposit to pay rent, Cuomo said. For landlords, the state is working with banks on bailout plans.

“We're trying to reach a compromise between tenants and landlords. We also help landlords, but humanly I don’t want families to be evicted at this difficult time, ”the governor added.
