The shipyard in San Francisco stops

After 150 years of uninterrupted work in the shipyard in San Francisco closed. Over the last 10 years the company BAE Systems, with a share capital of $ 27 billion was the owner of the shipyard, which consists of two dry docks.

For a long time one of these docks was the largest on the coast of California – it can take 900-foot liner weighing about 60 tons. But then came the larger docking competitor in Portland, which can accommodate vessels of larger size and tonnage. So BAE decided to get rid of the ballast and arranged to transfer the shipyard to the company Puglia Engineering, for a nominal $ 1 under the condition that the pension obligations in the amount of 38 million dollars.

When a new company undertook to manage the company, it was listed as 250 employees. But in February of this year, 6 weeks after the start of work, Puglia Engineering filed a notice about the imminent closing of the shipyard.

Representatives of the Maritime Union are closely watching the developments as worried about the fate of workers, many of them working for decades at the shipyard.
