In accordance with the agreement, which was developed by ICAN, any use, testing, development, production, stockpiling, transfer and deployment of nuclear weapons is prohibited. The Treaty will enter into force 90 days after 50 member States of the UN to officially ratify it. As of today, three countries – Guyana, Vatican, and Thailand – did it.

The United States, which with Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons, said that the Treaty will not do anything to mitigate a possible nuclear conflict, and may even strengthen. Despite this the text of the document was supported by 122 States. It is worth noting that all the 9 countries of the so-called nuclear club (U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel) did not participate in the vote.

It is noteworthy that the most brutal tyrants in history such as Hitler and Mussolini, was also nominated for the award in 1939 and 1935 respectively. Joseph Stalin was nominated for the award twice, after the Second world war, but was never awarded it.

Pope Francis, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, EU high representative for foreign Affairs and security policy Federica Mogherini are the main contenders that were considered as potential winners of the Nobel peace prize in 2017. Less likely it was Mohammad-Javad and the Economic community of West African States. All nominees for the award in 2017 steel 318 candidates (215 and 103 organizations). However, the choice fell on the anti-nuclear organization ICAN.
