On Thursday, the Governor of the state of new York Andrew Cuomo signed the law «On the protection of elephants», which prohibits the use of elephants during entertainment events, including circuses, carnivals, parades and exhibitions.
«Exploitation of elephants in these places is a danger to their health and potentially offensive – said Cuomo. – The law on the protection of elephants contributes to the efforts of the administration in the fight against cruelty to animals and the creation of a stronger, more humane new York.»
This document was adopted by the Legislature of the state in the spring. Member of the chamber and co-author of the law Amy Paulin expressed his opinion on this subject: «Imprisonment, torture, and unhealthy living conditions led to early death of these intelligent, gentle animals.»
The ban on the state level came after, in July, the mayor of new York bill de Blasio signed a similar measure that banned circuses to use animals in performances.
Another Cuomo initiative was the establishment of the capital Fund of 5 million Companion Animal Capital Fund. Its main purpose is to help non-profit and municipal animal shelters in the modernization of its facilities.
«This financial contribution will help to equip shelters in new York, so they can continue their important work of finding homes for stray animals where they will love,» said Cuomo.
The Fund was approved as part of the discussion of recent state budget. It will provide matching grants to offset costs for the upgrading of shelters, which should lead to improved care and treatment of animals.
