Poll: most Americans believe that tipping should be abandoned

The latest survey by YouGov showed that 44% of American respondents believe that it would be better to abandon the tip system and to increase the salaries of those who work in the service sector. While 36% of respondents prefer to leave it as is.

YouGov is an international Internet company with headquarters in the UK, which is engaged in market research and data analysis. The poll of 2017 on the feasibility of the tip was carried out among the 1.2 million respondents who gave their consent to participate.

According to the study, 32% of respondents give a tip regardless of their subjective evaluation of the service. And 49% usually leave an amount which, in their opinion, directly proportional to the quality of services provided. All who joined in the last group, I believe that is not necessary at all to leave a tip if they had to endure «awful» experiences with the service.

The survey was emblematic of the spheres, which, in the opinion of Americans, most deserving of «gratitude» for their work. 71% of American adults believe that employees of the restaurant business should receive additional remuneration. Then there are the people that deliver (62%), bartenders (56%) and porters at hotels (55%). A list of all the occupations you can see in the infographic below.

YouGov found that almost one in five people feels uncomfortable leaving a tip.

Just 4 years ago, the majority of the US population was quite the opposite opinion. Then the same YouGov survey showed that only 36% of the participants supported the idea of raising wages in return for the lifting of the tip, compared with 40% of respondents who did not like this idea.
