A new project of composting soil garden areas, implemented by the members of Lydia’s Magic Gardenon East 118th Street and Park Avenue involves the use of coffee grounds, courtesy of a nearby café, to improve the soil in garden areas.
The garden, which was closed during the last three years due to the adjacent construction project, plans to reopen to visitors next year. But it should be put in order. A new project of composting soil with coffee grounds, according to creators, will help Harlem garden to blossom with new vigor due to the normalization in the soil pH and improve its texture. Moreover, coffee helps and other important processes. So, for example, coffee grounds neutralizes odors, and in itself it smells wonderfully. Not that ordinary fertilizer!
In the programme of assistance to the garden are 3 local cafe. The owners are happy to take part in the project because they will benefit, because now the waste has become much less and not need to pay the disposal grounds!
For the implementation of the compost project was awarded a grant of about $ 750. Money certainly small, but for the project they were enough.
A total of 36 public gardens and green areas of the city in five districts received grants for their own programs composting soil. Over time, thanks to a unique program to improve the condition of the soil is planned to create public gardens where residents of the borough will be able to grow vegetables and fruit for themselves.
