For the first time in 40 years new York city marathon was won by the American

Shalan Flanagan became the first American woman to win the new York marathon since winning Miki Gorman in 1977.

36-year-old American ran the distance in 2 hours, 26 minutes and 53 seconds. Second place went to 35-year-old Kenyan Mary Keitany, which coped with the task a minute later and ran a marathon in 2 hours 27 minutes 54 seconds.

Flanagan reached the finish line with tears in his eyes, nodding to all the spectators and shouting joyous words. After the race Keitany that three times in a row won in this competition, embraced by their main competitor.

Among the men’s championship received a 24-year-old Jeffrey Camoron from Kenya, two-time world champion in the half marathon at 2 hours 10 minutes and 53 seconds. In second place was another Kenyan – Wilson Kipsang (2:10:56), and Lelisa of Dezis from Ethiopia took third place (2:11:32).

Today, November 5, during the marathon, a race on wheelchairs. For the first time this event was won by the representatives of one country – among men and women.

Today’s race began on the approaches to the bridge, Verrazano-Narrows to Staten island. Using of 26.2 miles was the finish on West Drive in Central Park.

In total, the marathon was attended by over 50 thousand – the organizers have not yet calculated the exact number. In 2016, the race had the maximum number of participants reached the finish line – namely 51 394. Then New York City Marathon became the champion among the largest marathons in the world.

This year the event organizers and the police paid special attention to security in connection with the terrorist attack in Lower Manhattan. Was involved snipers, air units, undercover officers and garbage trucks filled with sand, lock machines.
