Sutherland springs is located 30 miles Southeast of San Antonio and close to several military bases, including from the base of the air force Lackland, reports the Associated Press. The chief of staff of the air force General David Goldfein noted that 12 persons among those killed were in some way connected with military aviation.

Among them is 56-year-old Scott and Karen Marshall. They served there 30 years ago, and fell in love with each other and decided to meet impending old age as a time in Sutherland springs.

Many of those gathered at the farewell ceremony wearing t-shirts with the inscription: «Sutherland Springs Strong». They specifically brought Brenda Byrd, a resident of Texas, whose home was destroyed by hurricane Harvey in late August.

«Before the tragedy I had not even heard about Sutherland springs, and then decided to come and to do something for these people. I just had the feeling that I need to be here,» said Brand.

To parishioners and relatives of the victims asked and pastor Frank Pomeroy, who on that fateful day was out of state, but lost their 14-year-old daughter Annabelle, writes Daily News.

«The only way to defeat evil is to overcome it with good», — said the pastor. «I know your hearts are broken. Mine too. I lost the baby, I lost a lot of friends. But I decided not to succumb to the darkness.»
