Masha Gessen became a laureate of the U.S. for a book about the Russian totalitarianism

Russian-American journalist Masha Gessen has won the National book award in the United States.

This was reported on the official website of the award.

The award she received for the book, «the Future is history. As totalitarianism again conquered Russia.»

In the abstract the publisher notes that the book talks about «understanding the events and forces which in recent years began to destroy her native country.»

«At some point, reflecting on decades of Russian life and politics, I realized that he understood something very important,» she said Hesse. «So I decided to share this understanding.»

The book talks about the collapse of the Soviet Union, August coup, the two Chechen wars, the rise to power of Russia’s current President Vladimir Putin and the murder of politician Boris Nemtsov.

Masha Gessen is a journalist and the author of several books, including: «the Man without a face: the incredible rise of Vladimir Putin» (2012). A native of Moscow, she now lives in new York. Her writing appeared in such publications as: The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, Slate, Vanity Fair and others.
