Black Friday cannot be called old American tradition, but it also boasts its own history. This day marks the beginning of the crazy holiday season, when stores are trying to attract more customers, attracting their dizzying discounts and generous offers for the desired goods.
Custom suit sales in the day after thanksgiving, originated in the nineteenth century, and the term «Black Friday» appeared in 1966 in Philadelphia. The value associated with the idiom «in the black» (i.e., «positive balance», as opposed to the expression «in the red»), which means that the sellers «will come in plus» after satisfied customers make out promotional items from the shelves.
And although more modern bargain hunters prefer to add items to your cart online, without leaving the comfort of your own bed, objects in the truck with the comfort of a bed, many still gather at the doors of shops at dawn, hoping to prepare for the holidays and in spite of them. Approximately the same situation was in the early twentieth century, as we can judge by photographs from the archive of the Library of Congress. As in our days, the inhabitants of new York in the early 1900-ies massively flocked to the magic shop Windows, in search of gifts, cards or just a good mood, because nothing pleases more than a 60% discount.
