Community activist, radio host and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Plum, who also heads the State reform party wants to give voters a chance to abandon the city’s public advocate office and to elect the speaker of the city Council.
Plum offers to hold a public referendum in which to adopt a decision on the abolition of the office of public counsel, and that the speaker of the city Council elected by city residents, not members of the Council.
Plum claims that nepodrajaemyi the voters, the public attorney is an instrument in the hands of the mayor, paid at the expense of taxpayers.
Similarly, the election of the speaker of the city Council people will be deprived, according to Curtis, the party bosses leverage over him. The speaker shall be given more extensive powers in terms of supervision.
The issues raised by the Plum, could be solved in other ways. On amendments to the city Charter could vote the members of the Council, but Plum believes that this decision is not in their interest, therefore, doubts the success of the vote. He is willing to collect the required number of votes for the city referendum and ask all new Yorkers to support the initiative.
