Former mayor Willie brown, a close friend of Lee, said that the mayor was shopping at Diamond Heights Safeway, when he suffered a heart attack.
Ed Lee became the first Asian-American mayor. 11 Jan 2011 the Supervisory Board appointed him to the post after Gavin Newsom resigned to take the chair, the Vice-Governor of the state of California. Lee won the mayoral election of that year and was re-elected to the same position in 2015.
«He was the first high-ranking official of Asian descent in a major American city, in this country it has become in itself a decisive factor,» said brown.
«He was a part of it all… He was a procurement Director in my administration. He headed the Department of public works. He was CAO (chief administrative office) for the city… I just can’t imagine the city without ed Lee» — confessed to his close friend.
The mayor of new York bill de Blasio has dedicated a tweet in which he expressed his condolences:
«I am deeply saddened by the death of mayor ed Lee. He was a good friend and a tireless fighter for the rights of people in San Francisco. Our thoughts are with the family.»

For 2017 in Lee and President Donald trump were clashes over issues of immigration. San Francisco under the leadership of Lee has become a leader among American cities of refuge.
It is unknown where he will be the farewell to the mayor and where he was buried.
