American Teens are losing interest in nicotine and alcohol

American high school students are less interested in cigarettes, hard drugs and alcohol. To such conclusion analysts of the National Institute for drug abuse during an anonymous survey called «monitoring the future».

Over the past 10 years the number of smokers among young people aged 18-19 years declined by more than 20%. If in 1997, the nicotine used a quarter of graduates, today they only 4.2%. A clear downward trend can be traced in the use of alcohol and opioids.

However, there is bad news: the place of the old bad habits took a new — vaping and Smoking marijuana. According to the findings, the electronic cigarette was chosen by 27.8% of the graduating students, 23.9% of tenth graders and 13.8% of eighth graders.

The regular use of marijuana recognized by 5.9% of students from the age category of 18-19 years. Thus, young people tend to prefer cigarettes cannabis.

And yet, to date, the data are reasonably encouraging. While teenagers are moving away from the nicotine, most of them (70%) believe that marijuana is too harmful to their health.

With regard to opioids and other hard drugs over the past 13 years, their use among students has decreased by half.
