Study: 19-year-old also inactive, as 60-year-old

The Millennials boasts many. But there is something that should be ashamed. A study published in Preventative Medicineshowed that recent teenagers – 19-year-old young people nowadays are also inactive, as 60 year old pensioners. At least most of them.

Of course, older people sometimes can tolerate a bit of laziness in my life. This is due to fatigue, excessive stress and loads. But not in 19 years!

«The level of activity by the end of adolescence was alarmingly low, and by 19 years it does and can be correlated with the characteristic 60-year-old,» said senior author of the study Vadim Zipunnikov.

The study showed that physical activity among children and adolescents is even lower than previously thought, but the activity increases after 20 years. It is assumed that the surge is due to starting work full-time and other changes in life.

As soon as the mark is reached in 35 years, the level of activity in our lives again begins to decline and no longer increases with increasing age.

The study also showed that the activity levels depend on the time of day.

«For school-age children the main window for physical activity — from 2 PM to 6 PM,» said Zipunnikov. «So, the big question is how to modify daily schedules, for example, in schools to encourage more active physical activity?».

The world health organization (who) recommends at least 60 minutes moderate and vigorous physical activity per day for children aged 5 to 17 years. The study showed that more than 25% of boys and 50% girls in the age from 6 to 11 years and more than 50% of boys and 75% of girls aged 12 to 19 years did not comply with the recommendation of the who.

The study was based on data from the National survey of health and nutrition for 2003-2004 and 2005-2006. Work also included the practical part. 12 529 participants wore special tracking device within seven days, removing them only for bathing and bedtime. The device measured how much time participants spent sitting or standing (static) and how much time they have experienced exercise, showed physical activity.
