NYPD: 911 call in connection with the overdose will not cause arrest

The NYPD said that those who called 911 in connection with the drug overdose (the caller or the person who is next to him) is not facing arrest. This statement was made as part of a campaign to combat opioid abuse in new York.

The campaign, which is allocated 225 000 $ for 4 months. It will include social advertising in social networks and posters on ferries, subways and buses and on billboards in the Bronx and Staten island, the areas most affected by addiction.

According to police, the campaign also will focus on the 17 other «problem» areas throughout the city.

The statement stressed that, in accordance with state Law of the good Samaritan (Good Samaritan Law), those who reported to 911 about the fact of a drug overdose, will not be subject to arrest.

In 2014, the city recorded 937 deaths from overdose. Last year this number increased to 1374, and the statistics 2017 are generally shocking: 439 deaths in 5 months. More than 80% of deaths associated with overdoses of heroin and opioids.
