In the river the Calumet in South Chicago, about nine miles from lake Michigan caught the Asian silver carpthat somehow snuck through a network barriers. These barriers were installed in rivers and canals the waters of the Great lakes.

According to Charlie Wooley, the representative of the regional Department of fisheries and wildlife, United States, silver carp refers to four types of Asian carp, whose invasion in lake threatens local fish species. A year like that carp can ruin the food chain and devastate the fishing industry in the region of 7 billion dollars.

«But most of all, this carp was a loner who somehow was able to get to Chicago through the barriers,» said Wooley.

The fish will be sent to the University of Illinois, where biologists will try to determine more precisely where it came from.

What is so dangerous Asian carp?

The Asian carp came to the USA forty years ago. It was brought by farmers to destroy algae in fish ponds. He quickly dealt with it and now destroys the eggs of other fish and plankton, depriving other underwater creatures feed. Asian carp are very voracious and aggressive, and its victims can be not only fish but also people.

The fact that a shoal of such fish sees the boat as a threat and fled, jumping out of the water. At the speed these fish (some tens of pounds!) can break a man’s nose or even to cause a boating accident.

To protect against Asian carp between the Great lakes and the basin of the Mississippi, where usually there is a carp, was installed barrier system, operated by the corps of the US army.
