Every fifth student in the Los Angeles homeless

The problem of affordable housing in Los Angeles has acquired catastrophic proportions and hit the most vulnerable categories of the population — children and adolescents. Every fifth student of the Los Angeles College faced with the lack of a roof over your head, and two-thirds of students can’t afford normal food.

Such shocking figures emerged during the research conducted last fall in the lab HOPE at the University of Wisconsin. The survey found that more than half of the students barely pay for housing and 19% are currently homeless and have become established over the last year. Of these, 8% admitted that they were driven out from home, 4% were evicted from rented housing, 3% live in shelters and 6% in abandoned buildings, cars and other uninhabitable areas.

According to the study, lack of livelihood is a nationwide phenomenon among College students, but in Los Angeles the problem is most acute. 65% of students of local colleges can only dream about a balanced diet, and 60% periodically have to starve.

If to take into account not only students but also other categories of the population of the city of angels, the picture becomes even more grim. According to the latest statistics, last year alone the number of homeless in Los Angeles increased by 23%. Currently, local streets, home to 34 thousand persons, from them 14 thousand lost the roof over my head for the past 12 months.
