All the beaches of the Mississippi was closed due to toxic algal blooms

Summer is the perfect time to relax on the beach — unless you live in Mississippi.

According to the Department of the environment Mississippi (MDEQ) along the Gulf coast was closed on 21 the beach because of the harmful algal bloom (HAB). The Agency urges people to avoid contact with water in the affected areas, but it is not recommended to swim or go fishing «until further notice». Also, the bloom can be dangerous for Pets.

«The closure applies to contact with water and does not prohibit the use of sand part of the beach,» reads the statement by MDEQ.

According to the National oceanic and atmospheric administration (NOAA), harmful algal blooms, or HAB, occurs when colonies of algae — simple plants that live in the sea and fresh water — are out of control and produce toxic or harmful effects on people, fish, shellfish, marine mammals and birds. In humans, toxic algae can cause rashes, cramps, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. The disease caused by HAB, although rare, but can even lead to death.

According to NOAA, the HAB appears more often due to climate change and increased nutrient pollution.

If you think that you could be exposed to toxic algae, the CDC recommends that you call the local information centre for poisonings or to consult with a doctor about symptoms.
