Doctors at Mount Sinai West Medical Center in New York successfully implanted a Stentrode device into the motor cortex of a 48-year-old paralyzed patient who volunteered to participate in Synchron's COMMAND experiment. The aim was to evaluate the usefulness and safety of brain-computer interfaces for people suffering from paralysis, and the ability to control the device without the help of hands.
It is reported that a 4-centimeter chip in the form of a standron will allow the patient to telepathically control digital devices. Ideally, he will be able to independently send text messages, emails and perform other tasks that healthy people take for granted. Surgeons installed the chip using an endovascular procedure that avoided open-brain surgery. They inserted the implant through the jugular vein. Synchron reported that the operation was successful and the patient was discharged home 48 hours after the intervention. The brain-computer interface has 16 electrodes that monitor brain activity. They react to the activity of neurons when a person thinks about something.
The implant in the brain is connected to a device implanted in the patient's chest. Thanks to this technology, a paralyzed person can transmit signals from the brain to digital gadgets such as a phone or computer to control them. Experts note that the development of Synchron is ahead of brain implants from Elon Musk, who never received permission from the US Food and Drug Administration to use them.
The COMMAND experiment continues in Australia and is also quite successful. Four patients with implants installed a year ago feel great. Of course, a lot of time will pass when all people in need will be able to go through the procedure of installing brain-computer interfaces from Synchron. The FDA cleared experimental brain chip surgeries in July 2021.
The surgery, performed by doctors at Mount Sinai West, was a significant step forward. It will allow paralyzed people to take control of their lives again.
