The Governor of new Jersey Chris Christie on Friday signed a law requiring public schools to enter the state of public toilets for transgender people. Students should not be forced to use toilets that were inconsistent with their gender identity, said in the new law. In extreme cases, the school administration needs to be taken «alternative action».

A community group advocating for civil rights under the name of Garden State Equality endorsed the decision of the Governor, saying that Christie finally took a position of support for LGBT youth.

We will remind that the decision on the adoption of the law was not easy. The document was signed only after the individual schools in school districts across new Jersey began to create their own rules to the students-transgender people to choose a toilet based on their gender identity.

«These guidelines are necessary to ensure that the students-transgender people can safely be themselves without fear of persecution. They will contribute to the development of a culture of understanding and acceptance, which we hope will have an impact on how students will treat each other in school and beyond,» said Assembly member Valerie Vainieri Hall, speaking one of the sponsors of the bill.
