The remains of a man killed during a terrorist attack in the world trade centre on 11 September, was identified after 16 years in the tragic event. On Monday announced the chief medical examiner of new York.

The man, whose name was not disclosed at the request of his family, is the first victim of the tragedy, which was identified in March 2015. According to Dr. Barbara Sampson, chief medical examiner of the city, identification was achieved thanks to the recent progress in the process of DNA testing. A more sensitive technique and advanced method of extracting DNA from bones has helped to achieve a positive result.

About 40 percent of 2753 persons (1112 people), the victims of the terrorist attack on the twin towers, yet to be identified.

Currently, the office of the chief medical examiner is working with more than 20 000 samples of the remains, from which the experts extracted DNA samples. After receiving the DNA fragments from the bones, compare them with genetic material, given to the laboratory by members of the families of the victims.

All these remains are kept in an underground vault near the National memorial and Museum of the victims of September 11. Testing is conducted in a specialized laboratory in the Bay Kips Bay.

Matthew David Yarnell, 26, from new Jersey was the last of the victims who has publicly identified in 2015. Yarnell, assistant Vice-President of the technical group of the company Fiduciary Trust Co.
