New York will rename streets named in honor of Confederate

A member of the house of representatives Yvette Clarke criticized the Federal government and the army after they refused to rename two streets in Brooklyn, named after the generals of the confederates.

Representatives of the US army said they understand her position on the streets of General Lee Avenue and Stonewall Jackson Way in Fort Hamilton, but rename them not to be.

«Jackson and Lee, was stationed at Fort in Brooklyn before joining the Confederacy during the Civil war, and the renaming would be contrary to the «spirit of reconciliation», — wrote Deputy assistant chief of staff Diane Rendon, adding that Lee and Jackson were awarded this honor as individuals, not because of the ideology of the confederates.

But Yvette Clarke was dissatisfied with this decision, reports AMNY.

«It is insulting to hundreds of thousands of residents of Brooklyn and the military, because Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson fought on the side of slave-owners,» said Clark. She said she will continue to seek renaming of streets.
