«As Americans, we should be grateful to the crew for their courage in the face of a horrible death. This disaster was one of those circumstances that played a role in ending world war II. The search for the rest of the wreckage will continue,» said Paul Allen.

The death of «Indianapolis» is one of the most tragic disasters in the history of the Navy of the United States.

The cruiser sank literally in 12 minutes, and the mariners just don’t have time to send a distress signal and launching life rafts and boats. On Board then was 1196 sailors and Marines. Most of them perished: drowned or died from dehydration. Some were killed by sharks. According to the U.S. Navy, saved only 316 people, 22 of them are still alive.

«Even in the worst defeats, and catastrophes there and valor, and sacrifice that deserve to he them remembered,» says Sam Cox, managing Director of the naval history and heritage. «Valor can inspire other sailors, faced with mortal danger and helps the defeat the lesson that will allow in the future to avoid mistakes and to save lives.»
