It’s unclear what airport the couple was supposed to fly home, and how far it is from their hotel. Samana has an airport, but it offers mainly seasonal flights to the island from Europe. The next closest airport in the area — Cibao international airport in Santiago, which offers daily flights to the US and back.

In the message of the us state Department on travel to the Dominican Republic, published on 12 February 2019, says tourists should exercise extreme caution in connection with the crime.
