The capital of Turkmenistan may not come to mind when you think of the most expensive cities in the world, but it was Ashgabat that took the second place in the TOP 10 most expensive cities in the world for foreign workers.

The new Mercer's Cost of Living Survey was published the other day.

Hong Kong, in turmoil due to political unrest, has again topped the rankings, in large part because it has the most expensive real estate market in the world.

Mercer data was collected in March, so the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on prices is not reflected in the 2020 rankings, but with food prices already rising in the United States and elsewhere, it's safe to say that the most expensive the cities of the world are becoming even more expensive.

The ranking aims to help governments and multinational companies establish remuneration for employees who relocate to work abroad.

Six of the 10 most expensive cities in the world this year are in Asia. Switzerland ranked first in Europe, with three of its cities in the top ten: Zurich in fourth place, and Bern and Geneva in eighth and ninth. In the United States, the most expensive cities for foreigners are New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu and Chicago.

At the other end of the table, the cheapest cities are Tunisia's capital Tunisia (209), Windhoek — Namibia (208) and Tashkent, Uzbekistan (207).
