A bronze chest filled with gold, gems and other valuables worth over $ 1 million and hidden ten years ago somewhere in the Rocky Mountains was found.

This was told by the millionaire Forrest Fenn, who organized a treasure hunt.

Forrest Fenn, 89, told Santa Fe New Mexican on Sunday that a man who wished to remain anonymous had found the chest a few days ago, and the discovery is confirmed by a photograph the man sent Fenn.

“It was under a starry tent in the wooded area of the Rocky Mountains where I hid it over 10 years ago,” Fenn said. «I don't know the person who found him, but the poem in my book led him to the exact spot.»

Fenn gave clues to the whereabouts of the treasure on the internet and in a 24-line poem that was published in his 2010 autobiography, The Thrill of Chase .

Tens of thousands of people hunted for a bronze chest that was filled with gold coins and nuggets, jewels with rubies and emeralds, ancient wrought gold mirrors, ancient Chinese jade figurines and other valuables. Many quit their jobs to devote themselves to searching, while others have exhausted their savings. At least four people are known to have died trying to find the treasure.

Fenn, who lives in Santa Fe , New Mexico , said he hid the treasures to entice people to explore the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains and give them an «old-fashioned adventure and expedition for riches.»

When asked how he felt now that the treasure had been found, Fenn said:

“I don’t know, I feel both sadness and joy, because the search is over. I congratulate the thousands of people who participated in the hunt, and I hope they are still ready to go in search of new discoveries. »
