Lufthansa will replace the phrase «ladies and gentlemen» with a gender-neutral greeting

Lufthansa has abandoned the words «ladies and gentlemen» as a greeting on board — replacing them with a gender-neutral alternative.

A representative of Europe’s largest airline group said that the move was aimed at making all passengers on board feel welcome, including those who do not identify themselves as male or female.

«The crews were instructed to choose a greeting that includes all passengers, «he said, adding that the phrase» dear guests «or a simple»good morning / good evening» will be used instead.

The new policy, which will be implemented gradually, applies to the German airline Lufthansa, as well as to Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings.

The company said that its actions are a reaction to a «fair discussion in society» about non-binary gender identification and a demonstration of the desire to » appreciate all guests on board.»

Lufthansa is not the first company to abandon the words «ladies and gentlemen» as a standard greeting for customers.

Last year, Japan Airlines announced that it would use phrases such as «all passengers», «good morning» and «good evening»in its messages in English.
