The Palace of fine artslocated in the Marina District in San Francisco, is a monumental structure of great beauty. It was built in 1915 to serve as a Museum. The Palace is one of the few surviving buildings of Panama-Pacific international exhibition. It was rebuilt in 1965 and renovation of the lagoon, walkways, and protecting buildings from earthquakes was completed in 2009.

In addition to performing its primary function, the Palace is also a popular attraction in San Francisco and a favorite venue for weddings and photo shoots. The structure is so canonical that its reduced copy was placed in the amusement Park Disney’s California Adventure in Anaheim.

The Palace was built in a difficult time. In 1915, San Francisco was still trying to recover from the terrible earthquake and fire in 1906, the countries of Europe have experienced political and economic difficulties, which ultimately led to the outbreak of the First world war. The civic leaders of San Francisco decided to hold the exhibition, which was intended to unite the whole world, to resume trading to show what the future can be and to turn San Francisco into a truly international city.

Architect of the future Palace of fine arts was chosen Bernard Maybeck. His project partly resembled the Roman era: soaring colonnade, a massive rotunda, an elaborate pond was designed to cause the viewer a sense of quiet, solemn sadness. Nonetheless it was inspired by «crying ladies» located throughout the Park. The choice of such source of inspiration was extremely unusual, given the purpose built building, is to acquaint people with the works of artists of the time, when was born the modern.

After Panama-Pacific international exhibition, impressed by the residents not allowed to destroy the Palace. However, according to the plan, the building should not be permanent, so over time it fell into ruin, as planned, Mabek. Prior to extensive renovation, the building was used as a military warehouse and as a distribution center telephone directories and even as a temporary headquarters of the Fire Department. Reconstruction of the Palace began in 1959, which required just enormous funds. To bring the case to the end it took not only the public collection of money, but a small private donations. Only a businessman and philanthropist, has contributed $2 million dollars, which helped to turn the Palace into a full-fledged permanent building.

The League of the Palace of fine arts was established in 1965. This nonprofit organization has provided everything necessary to restore the beautiful structure. The efforts of many people to succeed, and everyone’s favorite re — opened to the public in 1970. Now there is a Museum and theatre.
