Canada to open border to vaccinated American travelers in August

Canada will ease border restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers from the United States on August 9 — and September 7 will soften measures for persons from other countries.

The Trudeau government's announcement on Monday follows several months of pressure on Ottawa and Washington to relax the rules for non-essential travel on the Canadian-American border .

Now the big question is how and when the Biden administration will weaken its own security measures.

A senior cabinet minister in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government said on Monday that Canada is looking forward to news of a retaliatory step by the Americans.

«We hope that at the right time the American government will be able to change its border measures, but we respect their decision,» — told reporters in French after the announcement Dominique LeBlanc, Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs.

“We hope to hear from them soon.”

What to expect from the US?

Canadian officials have said that while they support a permanent contact with their American counterparts, they have no information on how the US plans to act.

Later on Monday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked about plans to open the border with Canada.

“We continue to review our travel restrictions,” Psaki told reporters in Washington DC.

“Any decisions to reopen travel will be made by our public health and medical experts. We take this incredibly seriously. We look at and are guided by the advice of our own medical experts. ”
