Canada to open border to vaccinated US travelers in August

Canada to ease border restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers from the U.S. on August 9, and will ease restrictions on non-essential travelers on September 7.

Trudeau's government announcement on Monday comes after months of pressure on Ottawa and Washington to relax non-essential travel rules at the Canada-U.S. border .

The big question now is how and when the Biden administration will ease its own security measures.

A senior cabinet minister in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government said on Monday that Canada is looking forward to news of an American retaliatory move.

“We hope that the US government will be able to change its border measures at the right time, but we respect their decision,” he told reporters in French after the announcement Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs Dominique Leblanc.

«We hope to hear from them soon.»

What can we expect from the US?

Canadian officials have said that while they maintain a permanent contact with their American counterparts, they have no information on how the US plans to proceed.

Later on Monday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked about plans to open the border with Canada.

«We continue to review our travel restrictions,» Psaki told reporters in Washington.

«Any decisions to resume travel will be made by our public health and medical experts. We take this incredibly seriously. We look at and are guided by the recommendations of our own medical experts.”
