Hawaii begins a large-scale eruption of Kilauea volcano

The volcano Kilauea on the Big island of Hawaii prepares for a powerful eruption. On Thursday morning over the crater appeared of the ashes and smoke. This process has come into the view of surveillance cameras installed on the territory of the Hawaiian volcanoes Observatory. Staff from the Observatory and National Park, Hawaii-Volcanos urgently evacuated. It is expected that lava will cover all the surrounding areas.

According to the warning, the U.S. Geological survey (USGS), the intense phase of the eruption may begin at any time — the volcanic ash will spread in a radius of 30,000 feet, which poses a threat to within this zone, populated areas.

The eruption of Kilauea carries a risk for air transport, a route which passes over the volcano. The relevant warning was released at the National center okeanicheskikh and atmospheric research.

People near the affected areas, the Agency recommends:

  • keep calm
  • stay indoors and place damp towels at thresholds and tightly close the window
  • being on the street, urgent to find a shelter
  • in any case, don’t go outside without face masks and goggles — volcanic ash is very harmful to health
  • avoid driving the vehicle as videmo can be greatly reduced.
