Protracted rains in Japan took the lives of over 100 people

More than 100 people were killed and dozens unaccounted for — these are the effects of prolonged heavy rains and landslides in Eastern Japan.

Weather conditions from one year to challenge the people of Japan. This time the trouble came from the heavy rains. They started 3 days ago, after Typhoon «Prapiroon«, flown from the Pacific ocean.

Most affected island of Honshu, reported the Japan Times. The region suffered enormous damage:

  • About 2 million people were evacuated.
  • 12.7 thousand people were left without electricity.
  • 267 thousand homes were completely flooded.
  • Discontinued rail service to 37 destinations.

A search operation was able to begin only today, July 9. They involve 74 thousand rescuers.

Final data on casualties or the material damages yet. The danger to the public exists today, so for statistical calculations there is no time, said the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe. The official website of the Prime Minister published an urgent government meeting.

A number of world leaders have expressed condolences to Japan in connection with a large number of victims.

The Prime Minister of Japan suffered a series of meetings, including the summit «EU — Japan». The decision of Shinzo Abe was greeted in the European Union with understanding.
